Stage 2 Route Analysis

The route from Burgas to Veliko Tarnovo is far from a simple transition stage. While the first half of the race may allow the breakaway to form, the terrain becomes increasingly selective as the peloton approaches the final kilometres.

Midway through the stage, riders will tackle two categorized climbs:

  • Byala Pass (Category 3) – 7.7 km at 4.6%
  • Vratnik Pass (Category 3) – 9.2 km at 4%

Although these climbs are not extremely steep, they will slowly wear down the sprinters over the long 221-kilometre distance.

The biggest challenge arrives late in the stage with the climb to the Lyaskovets Monastery, measuring 3.9 km at 6.8%. Positioned roughly 10 kilometres from the finish line, this climb is expected to become the launching point for aggressive attacks from puncheurs and GC contenders.

Inside the final three kilometres, the riders will encounter narrow streets and short cobbled sectors around Tsarevets, with ramps reaching up to 9%. The technical finale could create splits in the peloton and make the sprint finish highly unpredictable.

Riders to Watch

Several explosive riders could thrive on this terrain, especially those capable of surviving the late climbs and handling technical roads. Stage 1 winner Paul Magnier will aim to defend the Maglia Rosa, but the difficult finale may favor punchy classics-style riders.

Teams with strong all-rounders are likely to increase the pace before the Lyaskovets Monastery climb to distance the pure sprinters.
